"Drawing" nights
Hey guys,

I'm reasonably sure this has been discussed in smaller circles (I know Sara and I have discussed it and I know Mike and I have discussed it and I know Mike and Kyle have discussed it and I'm reasonably sure Lisa and Mike have discussed it), but I thought I might as well make a post about it now so we all can decide what to do. I'm speaking, of course, about the lack of drawing that occurs on drawing nights.

I guess to be frank, I don't get a whole lot of drawing done when there's other people around that are a) interesting and b) just as chatty as I am. I consider you all very interesting and have a blast hanging out with you all, but just don't get any drawing done when I'm in a group setting. I need focus and quiet in order to do art, and I'm afraid that just doesn't happen in a group. I also am unable to turn it on and off at will... I have to be in the mood to draw in order to draw.

Now, since this is/was a drawing group, I would rather that my inability to draw with other people around did not interfere with the group. I really enjoy hanging out with you all, and am certainly up for getting together for socialization (IE: out for a movie or to a pub or whatever) but I think I'll have to "bow out" of the nights we designate for drawing so as to not inflict my inability to focus on the rest of you.

In any case, just thought I'd bring it up so there's no hard feelings because of the difficulty I have keeping my mouth shut so we all can draw ;)

Tote bag lines

I've just finished the lines for my part of the tote bag design. Anyone spot any errors before I start colouring?

Lisa usually says I draw boobs funny.

1:28 pm
Any ideas for drawring this week? I'd prefer somewhere with power, as I'll probably be working on my tote bag thing.

It should be noted that Lisa is still getting over her cold.

Hey guys, any suggestions of where to go, what to draw on Tuesday night? I'd still really like to go to the Glenbow.

Kyle had some good theme suggestions a while ago, maybe it's time to work on those?

Poll #903597 Drawing Night

So should we officially change Drawing Night to Tuesdays, then, starting next week?

Yes, I'm in
No, that's a bad idea
Other (post in comments)
I'm a gibbon

On a somewhat related note, this is sort of interesting:

Not great prizes, and you have to supply your own paint, but your art would get to be inside the Calgary Tower for many years to come. Thought y'all might want to know about it.

I've always said that if they passed the anti-smoking bylaws, non-smokers like me would more than make up for the revenue that pubs would lose. So now I feel duty-bound to put my money where my mouth is.

Or, more specifically, I'll put my money on a table and they'll bring me food and I'll put THAT where my mouth is.

You guys feel like drawing at a pub this week? In the past, Kyle and I have quite liked Limericks on Macleod Trail.

Also, we should discuss which night to move arting to. Kyle, are all your evenings free now thanks to the new job?

Drawing Tonight
I know we hadn't planned anything anyway, but I've got to head down to MyMacDealer to turn in my MacBook for repairs, and Thursday is the only night they're open late. I'd previously tried to turn in just my battery, but apparently they're not having any of THAT.

Table at comic expo
I just paid the $86 for the table at the Comic Expo, and mailed it off. Kyle, you owe Mike and I $28.67. We should also start discussing tote bags, banners, and business cards! I can do the totes and paper stuff through my work, and a good place to get a vinyl banner would be here:
A 5'x2' banner is $80 US, split between three of us is about $30 each, which is cheap. Or, there's always the Sharpie-on-newsprint option!

Calgary Expo & drawing this week
The Calgary Comic Expo is fast approaching, and booths are already for sale. We've been talking about doing an AFOJ table there this year, and now's the time to reserve one. The con itself is one day again, Sunday April 29th.

alym0use and haotian, do you guys want to get in on the table and sell art/commissions/whatever? I know for sure that kyohazard, hawkstone and myself want one. If we're going to have 5 people we should probably just get two adjacent tables while we can.

Let me know either way! I want to send in our application in the next few days. I'd also like us to get started on the custom tote bags we'll be doing through my work.

Also I plan to do an Otafest table again this year if you're interested, alym0use (and haotian too!), on May 19th.

Do we want to draw this week? The invitation is still open for it to be at our place.

Hey folks,

Sara's down with a headache today and I'm going to need to do some Xmas shopping tonight (I've been procrastinating :( ) so we're not going to be able to make drawing tonight. My apologies!

Shall we traverse the icy frozen tundra to embark on a journey of creating some two dimensional illustrative representations, upon this, the fast approaching forth working day of the standard week, or as it is known elsewhere, Thǒrsdagr?

Eat Flesh!
Sorry, guys, but plans changed--our product testing company called, and they want to pay Lisa and I $35 each to tell Subway if their potential new bread sucks. We'll do our best to take the bullet for the rest of you. (Although I hated the Wendy's Frescata sandwich before they introduced it, and they introduced it anyway, so who knows?)

We can still draw, but we'll just be a little tardy. Where do we want to go? Coffee shop again?

We should be able to host NEXT week, if you guys are still up for it.

Put that in your pencil and sketch with it!

So drawing this thursday?

And now a word from our sponsor.

I'm gonna resuggest something, since winter prevents us from going outside and drawing all sorts o' stuff, and inside locations are limited, why don't we try and do the project idea? Or theme nights, try to get us to draw stuff that we wouldn't normally do. I propose that each week until the weather improves that we find some cool little coffee place that we can regularly meet at and each week, each of us comes up with a project or theme that we can all do that night. (ex. everybodydoes a Superhero, or draw a comic strip (ala Garfield), or we all draw with charcoal, or a "hey, I brought a cool skull thing, let's all draw that".) A kind of illustraion friday/ life drawing/ art chatty group all rolled into one. I know there is also the ACAD life drawing classes, but I tend to find that by the last class or two I'm bored of just drawing naked people. This would give us a lot more freedom and variety. (mind you I haven't done the life drawing class thing for awhile so it might also be a thought, but I think the other has promise. Of course from the start I've championed this little group to be more of an art group than a friends group, with friends just makes it better.

Thank you for your time,

We now return you to your regularly scheduled program

Expressions and tomorrow?
Scott McCloud has a new book on making comics, and he has a really great instructional bit about expressions. I find this very fascinating since making easy-to-read expressions in comics and art is pretty difficult:

Someone also made a flash tool out of these to demostrate the idea of mixing emotional primary facial expressions to create a third expression:

Thought you guys might find that useful!

And how about drawing, Thursday? May I suggest either the Glenbow (Egypt, Greece and Rome: Art of the Ancient Mediterranean World) or the Nickle Arts Museum (Ancient Peru Unearthed: Golden Treasures Of A Lost Civilization)?

Drawing day is tomorrow! Is anyone up for it? It looks like it won't be very nice outside, so we can either find something along the lines of a mall food court, or you guys can come over here if you'd like!
What say ye?
